THEATRECOURSES All theatre classes are held at Lancaster First Assembly Church. NOTE: Students in 1st – 12th grade who want to audition for theatre productions must be enrolled in a choir class. Students enrolled in theatre classes are encouraged to audition for the productions, but are not required to. There is an additional fee to participate in the productions. Primary Theatre Students in 1st – 2nd grade will be introduced to theatrical terms, learn and develop basic vocal and physical acting skills, take part in theatre games, and perform skits and improvisation exercises. Students will gain confidence and communication skills while working with, and receiving feedback from, teachers and peers. These fun classes allow the students to gain experience in taking direction, memorization, expressing emotions, and working as a team. Students will be exposed to other aspects of putting on shows beyond "just" being an actor. Junior Theatre (Section A or Section B) Students in 3rd – 5th grade will be provided an engaging and uplifting environment with the goal of experiencing the skill and joy of theater! Students will learn and develop acting and stage techniques and vocabulary through games, exercises, improvisation, and scene work. They will work on stage presence and movement, emotional expression, and role-play, while receiving feedback from teachers and peers. While theater has the obvious product of an onstage display, it also teaches empathy, teamwork, confidence, public speaking skills, and is a chance to participate in a project from script to stage. Specifics will be tailored to the student’s ability level. Middle School Theatre (Monday or Thursday) Students in 6th – 8th grade will develop vocal and physical acting skills, and participate in various theatre pieces and exercises for both individuals and groups. Students will focus on developing a stage presence, understanding and analyzing characters and scripts, and following stage directions. The course may also work specifically on scenes and pieces from Academy shows. Instructors: Mr. Reji Woods (Monday & Thursday) & Ms. Bonnie Bosso (Thursday) Time: Reji: Monday A 6:00 – 7:25 CLOSED or Thursday C 5:30 CLOSED or Thursday D 7:00-8:25 CLOSED Bonnie: Thursday B 5:30 – 6:55 CLOSED- (No additional Thursday classes will be opened.) High School Theatre (Monday or Thursday) Students in 9th – 12th grade will develop vocal and physical acting skills, and participate in various theatre pieces and exercises for both individuals and groups. Students will focus on developing a stage presence, understanding and analyzing characters and scripts, and following stage directions. The course may also work specifically on scenes and pieces from Academy shows. Dance Theatre (Section A or B or C) NEW Students in 3rd – 12th grade will learn fundamental steps commonly used in musical theatre choreography. They will learn how to properly execute the steps, as well as terminology of steps. Once students have mastered various steps, they will be taught how to execute them by learning a variety of different combinations from many different styles. Students will learn stretches and exercises to strengthen their bodies. Shakespeare Readers Theatre- (This class will not be held this year.) Readers Theatre is an interpretive activity in which readers use their voices to bring characters to life. It requires no sets, costumes, props, or memorized lines. The performer’s goal is to read a script aloud effectively, enabling the audience to visualize the actions. Students will combine acting, interpretation, and rhetoric as they analyze and perform selected works of William Shakespeare and present a recital during the last class. This class is for students in 3rd – 12th grade.
